Naturally delicious, perfectly labelled

For the relaunch of its most popular products, the Schwartauer Werke  are relying on a future-proof labelling solution with visual alignment and modern networking in line with Industry 4.0.

Schwartauer Werke

The logo with the seven church towers from the old town in Lübeck is familiar to almost every child in Germany. For over 115 years, it has been the brand for delicious spreads from Bad Schwartau in the immediate vicinity of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck.

Relaunch of a breakfast classic

The most popular fruit products from the Schwartauer Werke accompany both young and older fans through their day with a rich and varied range. Germanys most popular jam, Schwartau Extra, has impressed customers since July 2017 with an even more natural recipe. During the course of the relaunch, the family-run company introduced a new, organic glass format with leaf-style embossing, which placed much higher demands on the labelling.

Visual alignment speaks in  favour of RENNER

Since the new 200, 340 and 600-g containers no longer have a pin on the bottom, it is no longer possible to align them mechanically as before. The narrow wine-glass label has to be inserted precisely into the jar indent, brushed into place and then transferred on to the seal, explains Tobias Seßler, Project Manager in the Technology department. Since this difficult task was not possible with our previous technology, we decided to implement a fundamental modernisation with two Modul machines from RENNER.

S Modul with trail-blazing machine design

The two RENNER S1800 Modul machines are designed for a maximum output of 33,000 jars per hour. New and existing formats are aligned precisely with the multi-stage camera system and servo-controlled pads. Three wet-adhesive units then apply the front, back and seal labels. As all the drives, including the star wheels and worms, are designed transmission-free using servo-motors, the Schwartauer Werke benefit from minimal maintenance costs. The machine front table with hygienic design also makes cleaning easier. Apart from the laser coder, control units for label positioning, tightness and MHD are also integrated for quality assurance purposes.

Flexible production planning

According to Tobias Seßler, another argument in favour of the RENNER solution was the excellent flexibility with regard to modified requirements in production and marketing. If necessary, we can switch cost-effectively from parallel operation to throughput by changing the machine front table, explained the Project Manager. Thanks to the structure, it is also possible to retrofit self-adhesive dispensers at a later date, and to dock on and off with servo-control, a self-centring function and with automatic height adjustment.

Industry 4.0 on board

In the interests of ensuring the high effectiveness of the entire system, both machines are comprehensively networked – partly with customer-specific hardware and software interfaces, and partly via Ethernet in accordance with the Weihenstephan Standard. As well as the operating data, the system also monitors the product flow and the consumables, and forwards the data to the higher-level IT. To ensure optimal support in every phase of the machine service life, RENNER Service can securely access the machine network by agreement using a VPN connection; for data-protection reasons, the network is physically separated from the customer network.

Fit for the future

With our modern Modul machines, we are ideally set up for our relaunch and for future labelling tasks, was the conclusion of Tobias Seßler. Both in terms of quality, and also in terms of information technology.
