For more than four decades, Casa Mendes Gonçalves has stood for high-quality vinegars, sauces and spices from Portugal. The family business, founded in 1982 and based in Golegã, began with an innovative idea: Instead of wine, father and son Mendes Gonçalves made vinegar from the local Torres Novas fig variety. Four decades later, the portfolio includes internationally successful brands such as Paladin, Sacana, Moreno and Peninsular. To this day, the family business feels committed to the region and, for example, has a daycare centre and a primary school built through an educational foundation.
NEW MARKET REQUIREMENTS
70 percent of the sales are generated through contract bottling, with customers also placing new demands on the labelling: “We are seeing high demand for larger, plastic-free labels and lid seals,” reveals technical director Antonio Oliveira. “In order to be able to realize these and other formats, we were looking for an efficient and reliable solution. Our old machine didn’t have servo motors and was difficult to fine-tune.”
SELF-ADHESIVE LABELLING FROM RENNER
On the recommendation of other producers, the family business opted for quality “Made in Germany”. They selected a compact and robustly built RENNER S720 Servo PSL machine. “What convinced us most was the clear communication, the solution-oriented approach and the sensitivity to our requirements,” Oliveira comments. Among other things, an existing laser printer was to be integrated for coding. Moreover, the integration had to take into account the special installation situation with low ceilings and limited space in the line. In addition to high flexibility, also precision and reliability, longer runtimes thanks to larger label rolls, were important, too, resulting in a capacity gain of around 30 percent.
NON-STOP OPERATION AND LID SEAL LABELS
The new machine currently processes up to 6,000 containers per hour – including square and round 250g and 500g jars or PET bottles with a capacity of up to one litre. For products with only one label, the two self-adhesive dispensers can also be used in non-stop operation. Currently, five different label formats are processed flexibly and precisely – from wrap-around labels to front and back labels to lid security, which is quickly and cleanly placed and fixed over the lid by moving pressers.
READY FOR THE FUTURE
Thanks to servo-controlled container plates, labeling at Casa Mendes Gonçalves is now significantly more flexible, precise, and reliable. “The new machine can already do more than we need at the moment,” says Oliveira. “I am confident that it will easily keep pace with new formats and future requirements.”
