Home at last: After a 14-year search, the creative joint stock brewery from the Upper Engadin has moved into an impressive new building in S-chanf. With a 25-hectolitre brew house, a brand-new bottling plant and solar power from the roof, the latest art of brewing merges with centuries-old tradition, the best ingredients and fresh mountain spring water to create a diverse culinary experience on around 1,000 square metres.
BEER AND GAZOSA WITH A SWING-TOP
Palü, Bernina, Belvista or Trais Fluors: The wide variety of Engadin beers are all bottled in swing-top bottles – as is the soft drink ‘Staibock Gazosa’ made from fresh mountain water and the finest fruit. To ensure consistently high productivity and quality, the brewery was looking for a labelling solution with non-contact and wear-free alignment using a camera system and servomotors. This avoids typical mechanical alignment problems such as broken swing-top wires or fallen, leaking or opened bottles.
CAN LABELLING AS WELL
A combination machine was also required, because in addition to the brown and white swing-top bottles, the newly introduced 0.33 and 0.5 litre cans also needed to be provided with a wrap-around label aligned with the opening. The two managing directors Daniel Käslin and Philipp Wagner approached RENNER Etikettiertechnik from Günzburg in southern Germany with these requirements. Wagner, who is also the brewmaster at Engadiner, already knew RENNER from his apprenticeship and had already solved some difficult labelling challenges with their solutions in his subsequent professional life. The reference customers visited were also consistently positive.
CONTACT FREE ALIGNMENT
The RENNER S960 SERVO Combi, which went into operation in autumn 2024, aligns the swingtop bottles in two steps with high precision and reproducibility with a positioning accuracy of +/− 0.5 mm. The body, back and swingtop are given a wet glue label and a selfadhesive label is applied to the centre of the closure. “As far as I am aware, this solution is a first in Switzerland and a unique selling point for us,” says a delighted Daniel Käslin. “It also offers added value, as the type can be identified from above and over-labelling saves time and costs when sorting the returns.”
CONFIDENTLY INTO THE FUTURE
In addition to an output of around 6,500 bottles or cans per hour, the labelling solution from Renner also gives the brewery room for new ideas. “We have two more formats in mind that we also want to realise using the new machine,” reveals Philipp Wagner. The brewmaster is relaxed about the startup phase at the new location: “With RENNER, I’m sure that everything will run reliably when it’s all finished.”
