Asigh of relief in the shisha industry: Following a temporary obligation to sell in small packaging, larger individual quantities may now be sold again in Germany. Sven Pracht, Managing Director of SOCAB GmbH, is also pleased about this. With an annual production of 2,000 tonnes, the ownermanaged medium-sized company is the largest European contract manufacturer of water pipe tobacco. With a total capacity of 6,000 tonnes, SOCAB is ideally equipped to meet the rapidly growing demand both within and outside Europe.
MORE THROUGHPUT WITH ROTARY MACHINES
In order to eliminate a bottleneck for the planned increase in production, the slow continuous labelling of the 200 g composite cans with tear-off closure and plastic lid needed to be replaced by a high-performance rotary labelling machine. On the recommendation of a label supplier, Pracht approached RENNER. “After initial discussions and a visit on site, including a practical test with our cans, nothing stood in the way of the collaboration,” recalls the SOCAB Managing Director. “A compact system and a medium-sized provider with a personal contact were also important to us.”
UP TO 18,000 CANS PER HOUR NON-STOP
In Sven Pracht’s view, the new RENNER S960 SERVO PSL meets all the requirements for productive tobacco production. With a maximum output of 300 cans per minute, it applies one self-adhesive wrap-around and one lid label. A tax label which has been pre-treated with hot glue is then applied to the side of the can and placed on the lid. Alignment is camera-free using the known rotation angles. For the non-stop operation required by SOCAB, the dispensers for wrap-around and lid labels are designed in duplicate, and the tax strips can be added during operation.
COMPLETE SOLUTION FROM RENNER
With RENNER as the general contractor, a satisfactory overall solution was quickly found which also involved two special machine manufacturers from Lower Saxony: FRANZ TÖLKE realised the sorting and
application of the lids, SIWA the handling for the tax label application. In addition, RENNER integrated the new machine into SOCAB’s modern production line, which includes a laser coder, a packer and two robot cells for preparing the cans and final palletising of the cartons. To avoid jams, the new labeller communicates with the upstream and downstream system components to trigger a belt or machine stop in the event of a fault. “Our new high-performance labeller means we are well positioned for future growth,” sums up Sven Pracht. “We would choose RENNER again any time.”
“RENNER gave us good advice and also provided optimum support with the fine-tuning.”
